The Smithsonian is a museum complex that consists in total of 19 museums, 9 research centres and the National Zoo, making it the largest museum complex in the world. The Smithsonian was founded on the basis of a bequest to the USA by a British scientist, James Smithson. The bequest was made in 1835 and amounted to about $10 million, in 2008 currency (reference: Wikipedia). Note that the art galleries are not part of the Smithsonian complex. |
